Lansdowne lottery ticket wins $10 million

Some customers used to gripe that Lansdowne Diner's lottery machine was short on lucky numbers, says owner Pete Arsenlis, 65.

Not anymore.

Yesterday, a group 22 workers at the U.S. Postal Service's Bulk Mail Center in Northeast Philadelphia claimed a cash jackpot worth $10,282,776.35 - before Uncle Sam's 25 percent take - for having the only ticket that matched all of the numbers drawn Saturday night.

They were 1, 4, 26, 32 and 39, with a Powerball of 18.

The quick-pick was purchased at the diner, which rings up $100,000 just for selling the winner, as Arsenlis found out from a lottery official who showed up Sunday morning.

So far, though, he hasn't seen a check.

Or even talked with the buyer of the ticket.

"He's a customer. He plays quite often," Arsenlis said.

Congratulations have been coming from customers, the diner owner said. "Everybody keeps saying, 'You guys you deserve it. Your wife works seven days a week. ... I know how hard you work over there.' "

The most anyone ever previously won at the diner was about $40,000, he said.

The group itself is shying away from any extra publicity, said Pennsylvania Lottery spokeswoman, Cris Stambaugh.

The jackpot was evenly split, each of the "Lucky 22" keeps $350,000 each, after taxes.

They presented the winning ticket for validation yesterday at state lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County.

They'll get their winnings in four to six weeks, Stambaugh said.

Fourteen of the winners live in Philadelphia: Larry Hibbett, Keith Williams, Maurice Long, Timothy Herbert, John Meehan, Raymond Jones, Michael Piekielski, Karen Henderson, Eddie Pacheco Jr., Beverly Smith, Winston Davis and Deneatra Jenkins.

From the Philadelphia suburbs are Barry Bellinger of Darby, Gregory Haynes of Elkins Park, Donald Akins of Upper Darby; Joseph McGugan of Bensalem, Gerald Boglia of Levittown, and Daniel McKay of Secane.

From New Jersey are Robert Singleton of Erial, Garman Gwynn and Ethel Gwynn of Willingboro, Karen Greenfield of Ewing.

Tonight's drawing is worth $15 million.

Friday's drawing in Mega Millions, the other major multistate lottery, is worth $16 million, because last Friday, a Michigan ticket hit the $42 million jackpot and no one snagged the grand prize last night.

The numbers drawn last night were: 2, 25, 35, 38 and 42, with a Mega Ball of 34.

The Lucky 22 marks the 11th time a Pennsylvania ticket has won Powerball. The state started taking part in 2002.

In August, a ticket worth $43.5 million in cash was picked up at the Turkey Hill Mini Market in Willow Street, Pa., just south of Lancaster.

Barrie Edwards didn't even buy it - he got it as a promotional freebie for buying two Match 6 tickets.

Edwards and his wife, Jean, shared the winning with a dozen family members.

They were the first Pennsylvania winners since March 2005.

Powerball is played in 29 states, including Delaware, and in Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

Mega Millions is played in 12 states, including New Jersey, Maryland and New York.
