After posting a Winter Storm Watch for Southeastern Pennsylvania for one of the busiest travel days of the year, the National Weather Service has now placed part of the region under a Winter Storm Warning effective 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The warning, which will expire at 11 p.m. Wednesday, affects the western parts of Chester and Montgomery Counties and upper Bucks County. Those areas could receive 3 to 6 inches of snow, the NWS said.

Depending on location, snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches could fall in Philadelphia and the rest of Southeastern Pennsylvania before the storm ends late Wednesday.

The precipitation will fall as rain or a mix of rain and snow in South Jersey. Less than an inch of snow is predicted.

The storm watch, which also covers Mercer County in New Jersey, goes into effect Wednesday morning, when rain is predicted to mix with snow. Temperatures will be in the low 30s.

The storm is forming off the North Carolina coast and will move northward

The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year and snow also could affect flights as well as road conditions.

"Anyone with holiday travel plans Wednesday should complete travel by mid-morning Wednesday to avoid any significant weather related delays," the NWS advised.

"There is a small chance wet snow could knock down a few tree limbs if it accumulates more than 4 inches on branches and wires. This could result in a few power outages," the weather service said in its storm watch statement.

Because of the forecast, American Airlines is offering passengers flying on Wednesday from, to or through airports in the Northeast, including Philadelphia, the option to change flights without a fee to today or Thursday.
