Police have arrested a homeless man for allegedly shooting a Temple University student Nov. 8 during a robbery in North Philadelphia.

Derek Hancock, 45, is charged with attempted murder, robbery, assault, reckless endangerment and weapons offenses.

Police said Hancock shot the 23-year-old student once in the left hip shortly before 1 a.m. on the 1500 block of North 17th Street.

The unidentified victim was treated for his injuries at Hahnemann University Hospital and released, according to investigators.

Hancock was taken into custody without incident Thursday on Temple's campus at Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, police said.

He has a lengthy rap sheet that includes past convictions for robbery, aggravated assault, theft, and controlled substance possession.

Hancock was jailed at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility after being unable to post 10 percent of $1 million bail. He is next due in court Dec. 9 for a preliminary hearing.
