Police: Officer hit by drunken driver in West Philadelphia

A police officer was hospitalized after being hit by an allegedly drunken driver on 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.

A police officer was hospitalized early Sunday after being struck by an allegedly drunken driver in West Philadelphia.

The officer was inside a police vehicle parked along the unit block of North 52nd Street shortly before 2 a.m., when he was rear-ended by a 2001 Mitsubishi, police said.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for complaints of pain to his neck, back and knee. He was listed in stable condition, police said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, identified only as a 39-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and related offenses, according to investigators.

She was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to be treated for a cut to her face.

The incident was the second alcohol-involved crash to injure a Philadelphia police officer in as many days.

An officer working a construction detail suffered minor injuries early Saturday when his police car was struck by an allegedly drunken driver at Broad and Tioga streets.
