Pa. congressman's aide arrested for carrying gun into Capitol building

The press secretary for a central Pennsylvania congressman was arrested this morning after attempting to take a handgun into a congressional office building.

Ryan Shucard, the spokesman for Rep. Tom Marino (R-Williamsport), was arrested about 9:15 a.m. when a metal detector sounded at the Cannon House Office Building. Security discovered a Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun in his possession. U.S. Capitol Police have charged him with carrying a pistol without a license, a felony.

Marino's chief of staff said that Shucard, hired May 27, has been placed on indefinite unpaid leave.  "That will last until we know more about the situation," said Bill Tighe.

"Capitol Police informed us that neither our office nor the Capitol community faced any danger," said Tighe. "We're disappointed with Ryan's lack of judgement and responsibility as a firearms owner."

According to his LinkedIn profile, Shucard previously served as a congressional aide and press assistant to Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.)
