Penn president wins Carnegie grant

For her work in carrying out the plan she launched when arriving in Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann was one of four higher-education leaders to win a $500,000 grant from the Carnegie Corp. of New York.

Winners can use the grants at their discretion for academic initiatives. Gutmann, a political scientist and philosopher, will apply hers to "student support with specifics to be determined," Penn officials said yesterday.

Gutmann was recognized for her 2004 plan, the Penn Compact, which emphasizes global leadership in teaching, research, and professional service; aims to open the university to more low-income students; includes involvement with the local community; and integrates teaching and learning across disciplines.

"I am truly honored to be among the ranks of the distinguished current and past recipients of this award," Gutmann said in a statement on the school's Web site, "and I am especially proud to accept it on behalf of the eminent faculty, students and staff of Penn."

The other grant winners are the leaders of Bard College, Tulane University, and the University System of Maryland. - Susan Snyder
