A prisoner escaped from the back of a police car in Atlantic County early Sunday and remained on the loose for several hours before he was recaptured Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Daniel Newman, 22, of Lawrenceville, Ga., was arrested Saturday night at the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City in connection with theft-related crimes, said New Jersey State Police. But while being taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Mays Landing, he escaped and fled into a wooded area while still handcuffed, police said.

Just before 2 p.m. Sunday, State Police announced on Twitter that Newman had been captured. Officials did not have further details immediately available.
