An Atlantic County grand jury has indicted a Mays Landing doctor on weapons charges stemming from a standoff with police this summer, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday.
James Kauffman, 69, was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and other counts in connection with a June 13 search of his medical office in Egg Harbor Township, and his homes in Philadelphia and South Jersey.
Police said he brandished a 9mm Ruger pistol when investigators arrived to execute a search warrant. He surrendered after about 45 minutes, and has been in custody since.
Kauffman was once married to April Kauffman, a local radio personality who was found shot to death in the bedroom of the couple's home in Linwood on May 12, 2012.
The doctor has not been named as a suspect in the case, and authorities have said the June 13 warrants were unrelated to their probe into the homicide.
A call late Wednesday to Kauffman's lawyer, Edwin J. Jacobs, was not immediately returned.
