A 12-year-old boy has died in a townhouse fire in Norristown.

The blaze broke out just before 9 a.m. Friday in a three-story brick duplex on the 1000 block of Markley Street, authorities said.

Norristown Fire Chief Tom O'Donnell told reporters that five people were initially trapped in the house, and one died. He declined to release the victim's name.

Relatives of the boy killed told 6ABC that the child ran inside the burning home to save his father, who escaped by jumping from a window. O'Donnell said he couldn't confirm how the family escaped the blaze.

It took firefighters an hour and 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

Another victim was taken to Paoli Hospital, but a dispatcher had no information on that person's injuries or condition.

The fire's cause remains under investigation.
