Settlement announced with RadioShack

The new owner of RadioShack, General Wireless Operations Inc., will not get access to sensitive personal information the company previously retained according to a multistate agreement announced yesterday.

Credit- and debit-card information, Social Security and telephone numbers among other data will be destroyed as a result of a settlement in federal bankruptcy court.

"My dedication to protecting the privacy of Pennsylvanians is unwavering," Attorney General Kathleen Kane said in a statement. "That is why I directed my staff to take a leadership role in this case."

While General Wireless will get the names, street and email addresses of customers, the email addresses are limited only to those gathered in the past two years. According to the settlement, the company cannot share or sell the information in the future to any other company.

Consumers may opt-out of further communication with the company after the initial contact, and anyone can opt out entirely by visiting the RadioShack website.

General Wireless and its partner Sprint will lease 87 of the existing RadioShack locations in Pennsylvania.
