An elderly woman in Upper Darby was burned on Monday after the car she was driving caught fire, according to officials.

At 2:05 p.m., the Upper Darby Fire Department responded to a car fire near State and Hampshire Roads, said Deputy Chief Jim Shuster. When they arrived, they found a Pontiac fully engulfed. Emergency workers were tending to the driver, who was pulled from the car by her passenger after she had trouble releasing her seat belt. He did not know the cause of the fire, Shuster said.

The unidentified woman, who had burns to her neck and chest area, was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, said Shuster.
