2 Temple football players charged with aggravated assault

Two Temple University football players were released on bail early Monday on charges of beating up a fellow student at a party in January.

Junior offensive lineman Dion Dawkins and redshirt-junior Haason Reddick, both 20, surrendered Monday to face the charges, police said.

The two are charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy, simple assault and reckless endangerment in the Jan. 15 off-campus attack on Temple senior outside Club 1800, 1800 N. 5th St., in North Philadelphia, east of the university campus.

According to police, the 21-year-old victim saw a friend being beaten up by "several males from the Temple football team" outside a party at the club about 1:30 that Sunday morning.

The victim told police he tried to pull his friend away when he was kicked in the right eye while other people, including Dawkins, held him back.

The victim and Dawkins started fighting after several other people hit him, police said.

The victim suffered a fractured right orbital and was transferred to Jefferson Hospital after initial treatment at Wills Eye Hospital, police said.

Those in the fight knew each other, police said. No other arrests are expected.

Dawkins, of Rahway, N.J.; and Reddick, of Philadelphia, were arraigned early Tuesday and released after posting 10 percent of $10,000 bail each, according to court records. They are scheduled to appear next at a preliminary hearing set for March 31.

Temple said in a statement the students have been suspended from the football team.

"The university has, and will continue, to fully cooperate with the Philadelphia Police Department in its investigation and will take appropriate actions outlined in the Student Conduct Code," the statement said.
