Schools opening late due to ice

Icy conditions across the Philadelphia region are prompting many school districts to open late Monday.

Dozens of districts, including Philadelphia public schools and Archdiocesan schools in the city, are on two-hour delays.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for parts of South Jersey and the Shore area until 9 a.m., due to residual sleet or freezing rain, the National Weather Service says. Patchy fog is also likely to reduce visibility.

Forecasters say the day is expected to become gradually sunny in Philadelphia, with a high of 39 degrees. But there's a chance for more snow, sleet and rain to come Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Roads

Authorities are warning of slick roads and sidewalks throughout the region, and motorists and pedestrians should use caution.

Police departments around the area were reporting that uncleared side streets, still covered in slush or ice, were especially likely to cause problems for drivers.

Speed limits on the Garden State Parkway have been reduced to 45 mph. The speed limit on the Atlantic City Expressway and the southern part of the New Jersey Turnpike were reduced to 35 mph.

Speed limits have been reduced to 25 mph on the Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross, Commodore Barry and Walt Whitman bridges.

The pedestrian walkway over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is closed.

The snow, freezing rain and slush were blamed for a number of accidents and travel delays throughout the area on Sunday.

Public transportation

SEPTA: A number of SEPTA bus routes - Routes 7, 35, 48, 75, 103, 114, 115, 130, H and XH - are being detoured due to the icy road conditions. Riders on other buses should expect delays. Customized Community Transportation service is operating with 90-minute delays. Customers can call 215-580-7720 for the status of their rides. www.septa.org

NJ Transit: The transit system is cross-honoring all rail, bus and light rail passes.

PATCO: Will be running an adjusted midday schedule affecting only eastbound service between 10:11 a.m. and 1:56 p.m. The schedule can be found at: http://ow.ly/JOs2t

Airport

As of early Monday morning, about 100 flights into and out of Philadelphia International Airport had been canceled or delayed. For flight status information, go to http://phl.org

Government

Government offices are opening late in Bucks and Montgomery counties due to the weather. Some municipal government facilities, including in Cherry Hill, are also opening late.

The Camden County Prosecutor's office will open late, at 9:30 a.m.
