Del Val students flood Phila. for Flower Show

DOYLESTOWN Delaware Valley College students create a display for the Philadelphia Flower Show each year, and this year's exhibit is "2139: The Rising Tide of Urbanism."

The display is a perspective on living on the rooftops in Philadelphia in 2139 after the city is flooded by the melting of the polar ice caps.

"We start right at the beginning of fall semester with the design," Michael Fleishchacker, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Sciences, said in a statement. "We drove the first nail in October."

The display, visible from a balcony, features fish in the flooded streets, floating islands used to grow food crops, and creative drainage systems from the rooftops to the streets.

The four students in charge of the display are from the college's Flower Show course. They also got help from student volunteers, staff, alumni volunteers, and faculty.

"The four of us brainstormed ideas for the design, went through a few drafts, and had a hand in building all of this," student Patrick McDonough said.

The Flower Show opened Saturday at the Convention Center and runs through Sunday. - Inquirer staff
