College planning tips for parents

BROOMALL The Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union and Claifi, a nonprofit community resource, held a free college planning seminar for parents with high school students last week.

"It is key for parents and students to identify the true cost of an education, then develop a plan to make it happen," said Allan Stevens, vice president and chief credit officer of the credit union. According to the credit union, the National Center for Education Statistics reported the average annual price for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, and board was $15,022 at public institutions, $39,173 at private nonprofit institutions, and $23,158 at private for-profit institutions in the 2012-13 academic year.

Representatives at the seminar discussed those costs, explained financial aid options, and shared ways parents and students can minimize college debt. - Inquirer staff
