Schools opening late due to icy roadways

After a night of a wintry mix of precipitation, dozens of schools in Philadelphia's Pennsylvania suburbs are opening late today to give ice on roadways a chance to thaw.

After a night of a wintry mix of precipitation, dozens of schools in Philadelphia's Pennsylvania suburbs are opening late today to give ice on roadways a chance to thaw.

Ice in the meantime is being blamed for a 13-vehicle pileup that claimed one life and injured a number of other people in the southbound outer lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike near Exit 9 in Cranbury, Middlesex County.

The outer lanes remain closed this morning following the chain reaction crash that was triggered by a jackknifing tractor-trailer and included at least three other tractor trailers, two box trucks and a fully loaded bus, according to state police.

Crews were out during the night, but a number of accidents are being reported around the Philadelphia area this morning, none so far involving serious injuries.

A water main break closed the Roosevelt Boulevard between Grant and Conwell avenues in Northeast Philadelphia for a during the morning rush.

Speed limits have been reduced to 35 mph on the Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman and Betsy Ross bridges and the pedestrian walkway in the Ben Franklin has been closed.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., after which we will have partly cloudy skies and a high of 35, according to the National Weather Service.

A number of districts comprising dozens of schools are opening late - mostly by two hours - in Delaware, Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties.
