A Southwest Philadelphia man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, police said.

Philadelphia police said officers were called to a report of a person with a weapon inside a home on the 2600 block of Muhlfeld Street in the city's Eastwick section at about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers found a woman who had suffered a gunshot wound to her mouth in a bed in a second-floor bedroom, police said.

Medics took the woman to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m.

Police who responded to the home also found her boyfriend, 64-year-old David Witherspoon, at the residence and took him into custody for questioning.

Officials said Thursday that Witherspoon was charged with murder and related offenses in the woman's death.

The motive for the slaying was listed as domestic. Further details weren't released.

The victim was not identified Thursday because police said her family had not been notified.
