The friend of a New Jersey police officer was wounded Friday when the cop's gun went off, authorities said.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said Pine Beach Officer Jesse Urban called 911 at about 6 a.m. to report that his firearm had accidentally discharged and a friend had been hurt.

The friend, identified as a 23-year-old Forked River man, was shot in the leg.

Prosecutors said the circumstances of the discharge are under investigation.

Urban, 23, has been charged with driving under the influence, authorities said, after investigators found evidence of alcohol and operating a vehicle.

Urban has been suspended without pay while the investigation continues.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven store located at 403. Main St. in Lacey Township.

The friend, who was not named, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was undergoing surgery. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
