Alex's Lemonade cracks $100 million raised

BALA CYNWYD Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, the Bala Cynwyd nonprofit dedicated to fighting childhood cancer, surpassed the $100 million fund-raising threshold during its annual Lemon Ball on Saturday at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.

The dinner, which nearly 1,000 supporters attended, raised more than $1 million, setting a single-event record for the charity.

The foundation hit those milestones just over a decade after Alexandra Scott set a goal of raising $1 million for pediatric cancer research by selling lemonade at a stand outside her family home in Wynnewood. Alex was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer, shortly before her first birthday.

Her fund-raising efforts started a wave of support that led to the foundation. Alex died in 2004 at age 8. - Kristin Holmes
