North Coventry Police Department receives commendation

POTTSTOWN The North Coventry Township Police Department received a district attorney's commendation Monday for its role in the investigation, arrest, and conviction of Shakeem Carter, who killed a man in North Coventry last year.

Carter stabbed Kevin Allen, a childhood friend, more than 30 times and set fire to his body in February 2013. Carter was sentenced to life in prison in October.

"This was a brutal murder in a normally quiet part of Chester County. The outstanding work of the North Coventry Police Department and the Chester County detectives led to a quick arrest and incredibly strong case against the defendant," District Attorney Thomas Hogan said via e-mail.

The award is being given as the county reacts to two other killings in separate cases in Chester County last week. Jacinda Miller, 41, was shot and killed by an ex-boyfriend, who then killed himself. Scott McMillan, 3, died after being tortured by his mother and her boyfriend. - Justine McDaniel
