Meeting to discuss heroin use in county and U.S. is planned

QUAKERTOWN A town-hall-style meeting Oct. 30 in Quakertown will discuss the heroin epidemic in Bucks County and the nation.

Speakers at the 7 p.m. meeting at Morning Star Fellowship Church will include State Reps. Paul Clymer and Marguerite Quinn (both R., Bucks), and Gary Tennis, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Officials from law enforcement and addiction treatment are also expected to attend.

The rate of heroin overdose deaths doubled nationwide between 2010 and 2012, according to a report released this month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Bucks County, the rate of heroin overdose deaths is 12.4 people per 100,000, slightly below the state average, according to a September report from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania. - Ben Finley
