William Wallace Vosburgh, 85, of Bryn Mawr, a sociologist and longtime professor on the Main Line, died of dementia Friday, Sept. 12, at his home.

His career was spent as a professor at Bryn Mawr College. He joined the social work faculty in 1962 and retired in 1994.

Dr. Vosburgh taught social theory, research design, and organizational theory in the master's and doctoral programs at the college. His research and publications focused on the design and effectiveness of social service programs.

Dr. Vosburgh excelled as a mentor and supervisor to more than 40 doctoral students who have gone on to important roles in academia and the private and nonprofit sectors.

On retiring, he continued his affiliation with the college as an emeritus professor.

Born in Waterbury, Conn., Dr. Vosburgh graduated from the Taft School, Yale University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, completing his doctorate in sociology at Yale in 1961.

He interrupted his studies to serve in the Navy from 1954 to 1956 and was an instructor in the Navy Reserve for many years.

He met his wife, Miriam Gilson, in Wellington, New Zealand, while there as a Fulbright fellow, studying the country's social security system.

In later years, he returned as part of a National Science Foundation team, studying New Zealand's innovative accident compensation system.

"He will be remembered for his razor-sharp dry wit, passion for learning, love of history, prodigious memory, gentle demeanor, and devotion to his family," his relatives said in a tribute.

Besides his wife, he is survived by daughter Alinda; sons William, Roderick and John; three grandchildren; and a sister.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Washington Memorial Chapel Churchyard, Route 23, Valley Forge.

Contributions may be made to the Montgomery County SPCA, 19 E. Ridge Pike, Box 222, Conshohocken, Pa. 19428.
