Angela Hurtubise, realty agent

Angela Giribaldi Hurtubise, 80, of Haverford, a teacher and later a real estate agent, died Wednesday, July 16, of pneumonia at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

The daughter of an American mother and an Italian physician father, she and her mother and grandmother moved from Italy to the Philadelphia area in the 1940s, on the advice of relatives, during World War II. She was 10.

Mrs. Hurtubise graduated from the Agnes Irwin School, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Education with a bachelor's degree.

After graduating in 1955, she married Wayne Hurtubise, an internist, and taught English at Ardmore Junior High School for 10 years. Her summers were spent in the family home in Avalon, N.J., and in her family's Italian villa in Bordighera.

She lived in Villanova before moving to Haverford.

Once her five children reached school age, Mrs. Hurtubise became a real estate agent with Fox Roach, now Berkshire-Hathaway HomeServices. She was a member of the Million Dollar Club and also served on the Grievance Committee for the Main Line Board of Realtors, mediating disputes between agents. "She was fair and honest, almost like a lawyer or a judge," said her husband.

She also was active on the Agnes Irwin School board.

During a cruise to and through the Panama Canal in 1999, she suffered a stroke and was airlifted from a hospital in Guatemala City to Florida, and from there to Bryn Mawr Hospital, where her husband was on staff.

Just by happenstance a group of doctors from the Cleveland Clinic was deployed to the hospital in Guatemala City when Mrs. Hurtubise was brought in, and one of the doctors remained at her side. "We were lucky," her husband said.

She was forced to retire. The couple moved to the Quadrangle in Haverford in 2001.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Lauren McKinney, Leslie Steidle Kelly, Sandy Ulmer, Jen Schaeffer, and Meg Wolgamott, and 10 grandchildren.

A visitation starting at 10 a.m. will be followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home, 30 E. Athens Ave., Ardmore. Interment will be at the Hurtubise mausoleum in West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
