Pipeline problem in Bucks causes water reduction

NEWTOWN Amid the summer's first heat wave, officials in lower Bucks County called for residents to reduce their water usage, as a pipeline problem caused water supply issues in Newtown, Northampton, Upper Southampton, and portions of Bensalem.

Patrick Cleary, spokesman for the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority, said the affected towns were not in danger of running out of water. Demand was simply overwhelming capacity, he said, since one of the authority's suppliers was wrapping up work on a new pipeline.

Once the pipeline is finished, Cleary said, consumption can return to normal. The suppliers hope that happens by week's end, he said.

The Newtown Artesian Water Company, which supplies customers in Newtown and Middletown, said in a message on its website that customers should temporarily curtail activities such as watering the lawn, washing cars, or filling swimming pools. - Chris Palmer
