Committee chosen to study return of rail service in West Chester

WEST CHESTER An effort to return rail service to West Chester has taken a step forward, with the borough council selecting the group that will led the charge.

The Restoration Rail Service Committee, which was established in February, will be made up of seven members, three of whom are borough residents, the borough announced last week. The seven are David Thurston, Michael Thurston, JoAnn Kelton, John Young, Joe Lorini, Tom Hickey, and Craig Blizzard.

The committee is tasked with advocating for and facilitating the return of rail service to West Chester by collecting data, networking with other groups likely to become allies, and advising the borough council of local and state issues that might have a bearing on the process.

SEPTA's Media/Elwyn Regional Rail Line, then the R3 line, stopped running to West Chester in 1986, borough council president Jordan Norley said. Although supporters of bringing rail service back have discussed restoring that line, the Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line could also be extended, Norley said.

"We have a very talented group of people with diverse backgrounds who will all help to achieve the overall goal of someday soon restoring rail service to West Chester," Norley said in a statement.
