Law will create military award winners database

CHESTER COUNTY

Pa. law will create a database

of military award winners

HARRISBURG Gov. Corbett signed into law on Wednesday a bill backed by State Sen. Andrew Dinniman (D., Chester) that will create a database of military award winners to keep people from falsely claiming they have won the honors.

Under Act 59, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will create a public, searchable database that will list Pennsylvania residents who have won the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, the Air Force Cross, and the Silver Star. It will include recipients' full names, the dates they served in the military, the names of the awards, and the dates they received their awards.

"We want to protect and proclaim the real heroes of this nation," Dinniman said.

The database is expected to be available by November. Within the next year, the law says, the department must study whether it can expand the database to include all military awards.
