Sun Valley finishes first and second in JROTC fitness competition

ASTON Hard work paid off for the Sun Valley High School JROTC fitness teams.

The Aston Township school placed first in the boys' division and second in the girls' division of the National High School Youth Physical Fitness Championships on May 16-17 in San Diego.

The competition included five timed events - sit-ups, push-ups, standing long jump, pull-ups, and 300-yard shuttle run.

Senior Doug Neubauer finished third in the boys' individual competition, and senior Rosie Carrillo and sophomore Stephanie Farnsworth finished second and third, respectively, in girls' individual competition. The teams - each consisting of six members - were coached by Master Gunnery Sgt. James T. Pearn.

There are 92 members of the Sun Valley JROTC, and the 12 participants were picked for the championship competition based on performances during a meet in the Bronx, N.Y., on April 26, according to the school

The Sun Valley teams had to qualify on a state level before advancing to the championships in California. The trip was funded by the United States Marines Youth Foundation Inc., local donations, and fund-raising efforts by the students.
