Ware Mansion open for showhouse

OXFORD The historic Ware Mansion in Oxford unveiled its makeover last weekend as it opened a three-week showcase to raise money to help seniors pay for housing at Ware Presbyterian Village, a retirement community.

The three-story county landmark, built in the late 1880s, has undergone major indoor renovations for the last few months and is showing off various rooms that have been furnished by area designers. During the Designer Showhouse and Gardens event, volunteers also will share some of the mansion's history, and local artisans will sell jewelry, artwork, pottery, and other items.

Presbyterian Senior Living owns the building, which includes four independent-living apartments and social and office space. During its history, the mansion, which once belonged to former state senator and U.S. Congressman John Ware, has also served as a sanitarium and a hospital.

Designers were invited to help transform the mansion. "It's just been a great way to accomplish all the work," said Laurel Shaffer, a vice president at Presbyterian Senior Living.

The showcase will run through June 7. Tickets are available at the door and at www.waredesignershowhouse.org.
