Delaware Riverkeeper to honor two Bucks towns

YARDLEY The Delaware Riverkeeper Network will honor two Bucks County towns that helped fight a law that would have stripped municipalities of the power to control where natural gas drilling could occur within their boundaries.

Yardley and Nockamixon were among seven towns across the state that, along with the riverkeeper network, challenged Act 13 in court.

Provisions of the 2012 law would have allowed Harrisburg to trump local zoning laws when it came to drilling. The state Supreme Court ultimately struck down that provision.

The riverkeeper network will honor Yardley on Tuesday at the Borough Council meeting. A date has yet to be set for Nockamixmon.

"Yardley Borough deserves recognition for the leadership shown in pursuing this challenge," Maya van Rossum, the Delaware riverkeeper, said in a statement.
