More Montco farm land is preserved

NORRISTOWN Montgomery County's Stanley Detwiler Farm No. 1, a 29-acre crop farm, and Emma Maynard Estate and Charolette Maynard Farm No. 1, an 85.1-acre crop farm, were designated for safeguarding last week when the state added 28 farms and nearly 2,800 acres to the preservation program.

The Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board took the action Thursday, affecting properties in 13 counties.

"The best agriculture land is often the best land for development, but our farmland-preservation program ensures prime soils stay in farming," Agriculture Secretary George Greig said.

The Pennsylvania Agricultural Conservation Easement Purchase Program identifies properties and slows the loss of prime farmland to nonagricultural use. It enables state, county, and local governments to buy conservation easements, also called development rights, from owners of good-quality farmland.
