Springfield High to hold charity dance marathon

SPRINGFIELD Springfield High School will host the 12th annual Steve Stefani Dance Marathon on Friday and Saturday to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund, which benefits children with cancer.

The student-sponsored event is affiliated with Penn State University's Thon, the nation's largest student-run philanthropy. Springfield's marathon will start at 6 p.m. on Friday and end at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Students will attempt to stay on their feet for the entire 15 hours.

Spectators are invited to watch and cheer. Admission is $5. There also will be events throughout the night, such as lip-synching, teacher talent contests, and raffles. The dance marathon was started to honor Stefani, an Eastern Orthodox deacon and social studies teacher at Springfield for 32 years who died of lung cancer in 2002.

Since it started, the marathon has raised $989,267, organizers said. The goal this year is $125,000.

The Four Diamonds Fund benefits pediatric cancer patients who are treated at the Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey, Pa.
