The newspaper scored the top prize in the category of sports event coverage for reporting on the final round of the 2013 U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club.

Staff writer Alfred Lubrano won first place in news beat reporting for his coverage of issues related to poverty.

Staff writer Kathy Boccella took first place in feature writing for a story about the 50-year anniversary of one of the ugliest racial incidents in Philadelphia history.

News editors Brian Leighton and Jackie Prins were awarded first place in front page design.

The Philadelphia Daily News won seven first-place awards and claimed the top "sweepstakes" honor in the competition among the state's largest newspapers.

Daily News staff writers Barbara Laker and David Gambacorta took first place in the series category for reporting on gun violence in Philadelphia. Helen Ubinas won first place for column writing, and Tom Ferrick Jr. won first place in editorial writing.

The Daily News staff was awarded first place in the categories of breaking news and special project.

Staffers at both papers won a combined total of 19 second place awards and honorable mentions.

Close to 4,300 entries were received from 142 newspapers in the state.

Entries - in 27 categories across seven circulation divisions - were judged by journalists in New York.

The 2014 winners will be honored at the Keystone Press Awards Banquet on May 31 in State College.
