Hundreds of homes evacuated in Delco

NEARLY 300 homes in Delaware County received a voluntary evacuation order yesterday, after PECO shut off gas to clear a blocked main.

About 11 a.m., the utility company received numerous calls from customers in Norwood saying that their homes weren't being heated properly, spokesman Fred Maher said. When crews went to investigate, they found that water had seeped into a gas main and had it up.

An evacuation order was issued to 283 households, Maher said, but it wasn't mandatory.

"There were never any safety issues," he said. "Customers could have stayed home if they wanted to."

The blockage was reported cleared by 5 last night, PECO said. Service was expected to be fully restored by midnight.

In the interim, the Red Cross set up a "warming station" at St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Church on Mohawk Avenue near Cleveland in the borough.
