Delco conference to host girls' program

Conference to host girls' program

WAYNE It is middle school when girls often retreat from leadership positions to gain acceptance from their peers.

The Women's Resource Center of Wayne is trying to change that, said Angela Marchesania, coordinator of volunteers and programs.

On Saturday, the Annual Girl's Leadership Conference will host "Being Young and Making a Difference" at the Radnor Middle School. About 100 seventh-grade girls from seven participating middle schools in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery Counties are expected to attend. The event is closed to the public.

The girls will hear from three high school students about their volunteer experiences, including one who is setting up a nonprofit to help a school in Africa, during the Young Leaders Panel Discussion. Stephanie Max, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, will talk about her time in the military and reserve, said Marchesania. The girls will also help make small fleece blankets to be donated to women veterans at the Coatesville VA Medical Center. - Mari A. Schaefer
