Weddings were targets of thief

BRIDGEPORT A Bridgeport man who took crashing wedding receptions to criminal lengths pleaded guilty Monday to stealing thousands of dollars in cash, checks, and gift cards given to newlyweds.

Joseph Patrick Franzone, 36, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft and one of attempted theft for the four receptions that he targeted last year, said Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Lindsay O'Brien.

Authorities said that in Lower Gwynedd, Franzone took a box containing $1,385 in cash and checks; in Upper Providence, he took $9,000; in Lancaster County, he took $1,150; and in Chester County, he tried to take about $4,000 in cash and checks but was stopped by a guest.

Two of the charges were felonies because of the amount of money, and two were misdemeanors.

O'Brien said investigators are not sure why he chose the receptions.

The pleas were not part of a plea deal. Franzone is in the Montgomery County Correctional Facility awaiting his sentencing, which should occur in about 90 days. - Carolyn Davis
