Delco Democrats split endorsements

LANSDOWNE The Democratic primary in the 164th Legislative District is heating up, with two candidates splitting some key endorsements.

The Delaware County Democratic Committee endorsed Rep. Margo Davidson, who in 2010 became the first Democrat to represent her district.

One of her primary challengers, Billy Smith, has received the endorsement of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the state's largest teachers' union. The union announced its endorsement at an event with Smith on Saturday.

"It is a hotly contested race," said David Landau, chairman of the Delaware County Democratic Committee.

Landau said that all Democratic incumbents were endorsed by the Delaware County Democrats, but that Smith received "a chunk of votes" from committee members.

Smith, 39, a defense lawyer from Lansdowne, said he was running in part because he found Davidson's voting record too conservative.

Dafan Zhang of East Lansdowne, a law student at the University of Pennsylvania, is also seeking the Democratic nomination for Davidson's seat.

The 164th District includes Upper Darby, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne, Millbourne, and Yeadon.
