Hearing set for railroad safety

EDDYSTONE A hearing on the safety of transporting crude oil across Pennsylvania via railroad is scheduled to be held in Delaware County on Wednesday.

The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee is set to host the event at the Eddystone Fire Company No. 1, 1112 E. Seventh St., starting at 9:30 a.m., according to officials. The hearing will also be streamed live at pahousegop.org.

State Reps. Joe Hackett and Stephen Barrar will bring together emergency personnel, officials from railroad companies, and local officials to discuss plans should an incident occur in the county, said David Foster, a spokesman for Hackett.

"It is simply to find out what they are doing for safety," Foster said.

The meeting was planned after a fiery train wreck in North Dakota in December involved railcars loaded with crude oil. A month later, train cars - including crude oil tankers - derailed on a bridge over the Schuylkill.

Those expected to attend the meeting include representatives from the CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroads, Associated Petroleum Industries of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, Delaware County Emergency Services, Tinicum and Ridley Townships, and Eddystone Borough. - Mari A.
