Swarthmore receives $5 million donation

College receives $5 million donation

SWARTHMORE A $5 million donation will promote the liberal arts at Swarthmore College.

The gift from James and Anahita Lovelace will establish the Frank Aydelotte Foundation for the Advancement of the Liberal Arts. Named for a former president of the college, the foundation will support an intellectual community for faculty members, said Associate Provost Patricia Reilly.

James Lovelace graduated from Swarthmore in 1979, and serves on the college's board of managers. His donation will create an endowment to continue work that began in 2012 as the college's Institute for the Liberal Arts. Reilly said that institute, which recently held a symposium on the future of the liberal arts, will be folded into the Aydelotte Foundation.
