Pitt names U.S. official chancellor

The University of Pittsburgh, one of Pennsylvania's four state-related universities, has tapped a U.S. Commerce Department official to be its next chancellor.

Patrick Gallagher, 50, is acting deputy Commerce secretary, serving as chief operating officer of the 40,000-employee agency and overseeing a budget of $10 billion.

Pitt has about 25,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students. Like the other state-related universities - Pennsylvania State, Temple, and Lincoln Universities - it draws students from throughout Pennsylvania.

The announcement followed a board of trustees vote Saturday.
