A program to laugh away your ills

LINWOOD, N.J. Are you feeling under the weather? Gilda's Club of South Jersey believes that a good laugh may be the best medicine.

The Atlantic County cancer charity will host a "Laughter is the Best Medicine" wellness program on Feb. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It will be presented by Maryann Prudhomme, a registered nurse and director of Bayada Home Health Care.

According to the club, laughter releases tension, similar to sneezing, and can have a positive affect on the body and overall health.

Prudhomme will discuss the physical and mental health benefits of laughter, including boosting immunity and reducing pain. She will also discuss the social benefits of laughter, which can promote group bonding and improve teamwork.

There are expected to be plenty of jokes in the presentation, in keeping with the namesake of the charity, the comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. There is a network of Gilda's Clubs around the country that offer social and emotional support to cancer patients.

There will also be a brief, but funny, film.

The event is free and open to the public. An RSVP is required.
