Corbett nominates Bono to be Montco sheriff
WEST NORRITON Gov. Corbett on Tuesday nominated retired Norristown Police Chief Russell Bono to be the next Montgomery County sheriff.
"We're really pleased at the governor's swift action on this," said State Rep. Mike Vereb of West Norriton, who heads the county GOP committee.
Because the former office holder, Eileen Whalon Behr, was Republican, the GOP was entitled to recommend a successor.
The nomination goes to the state Senate, where procedurally it must wait for 10 days before members can vote on it. A simple majority is needed for confirmation.
Vereb said Tuesday afternoon he was hoping the expected confirmation would take place next month.
"My home senators here that I've spoken with all see it as something that can be done very quickly," he said.
Behr, whose last day was Friday, quit to become director of police operations at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
