New health care law does not affect Bucks firefighters

New law does not impact firefighters

Addressing concerns held by U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R., Bucks) and other lawmakers, the U.S. Treasury has said the new health-care law will not impact the nation's volunteer firefighters.

In a statement released late Friday, the Treasury said volunteer fire companies will not have to follow the Affordable Care Act's requirement that employers with 50 or more employees offer health insurance. There had been some concern because the IRS considers volunteer fire companies "employers" and their firefighters "employees" for federal tax purposes.

Fitzpatrick, whose congressional district is served almost entirely by volunteer firefighters, joined a growing chorus of lawmakers and firefighter organizations that demanded clarification from the federal government.
