Ballet dancers from the area to compete at Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE Some of the area's best ballet dancers from area companies are set to compete in this weekend's Youth America Grand Prix scholarship semifinals competition.
The event, which is expected to draw hundreds of dancers from the region, is scheduled to be held Friday and Saturday at Swarthmore College's Lang Performing Arts Center, 500 College Ave.
The Friday public schedule is listed as from 2 to 10:15 p.m., and the Saturday public schedule is from 4:10 to 10 p.m.
Tickets for the semifinals are free for anyone under 21 and $5 for those over. The precompetition workshops are not open to the public.

The event was founded in 1999 by Bolshoi Ballet dancers Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev. Since then, according to the organizers, more than 25,000 young dancers have competed for about $2 million in scholarships to dance schools.
The final round of the competition is set to be held in New York City at a date to be announced.
