Cops book father after son gets shot

A 38-YEAR-OLD MAN was arrested in Camden late New Year's Eve after police say he accidentally shot his 2-year-old son with an illegally owned handgun.

Officers were called to Cooper University Hospital in the city just before 11 p.m. for the report of the tot being treated for gunshots to the left arm and left leg. When they arrived at the hospital, police said, they were met by Sergio Rivera, the boy's father, who told them he had accidentally shot his son while in a parked car with the boy's mother and grandmother, at 21st Street and Pierce Avenue.

Police said Rivera drove the child straight to the hospital after the shooting, but was uncooperative with detectives during the investigation.

Rivera was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, child endangerment, drug possession and related offenses, police said yesterday. Cops found the 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun in his car and also found several Percocet pills on him, police said.

Rivera was being held at the Camden County jail yesterday on $185,000 cash or bond bail. The little boy is recovering from his injuries, police said.
