'Two Boring People' promote volunteerism

BLACKWOOD Life has never been more hectic for Teddy and Allison Munz, the South Jersey couple who have made "boring" a rallying cry for volunteerism.

After fulfilling Christmas holiday wishes for toys and food for struggling families, they are gearing up for their next mission.

Their charity, "Just Two Boring People," is embarking on a project to help three  South Jersey families whose lives were touched by tragedy last year. They include:

  1. The family of 4-year-old Liam Lindsay of Glendora, who was recently diagnosed with acute leukemia.

  2. The family of Danielle Ciccozzi, 35, of Washington Township, a third-grade teacher who died in November from a blood-clot disorder during her pregnancy.

  3. The family of Tim Loper, 27, of Camden, a Marine who was gunned down in Camden last month while trying to break up a bar fight.

"These families are hurting," Teddy Munz, 34, of Blackwood, a high school English teacher, said this week. "These are three deserving families."

For the next three months, the Munzes, along with a team of volunteers, plan to hold a series of activities and events to raise funds for the families.

The first event scheduled was a New Year's Day boot camp at Royal Fitness in Barrington, where Teddy Munz is an instructor. Allison Munz, a stylist at a Philadelphia hair salon, will teach a yoga class at the gym on Sunday nights in February.

The couple, who just returned this week from a belated honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, are also working on a cookbook of healthy recipes to sell as a fund-raiser.

A tattoo party is also in the works at Empire Tattoo Inc. in Clementon. Patrons will be able to get a fist-size tattoo for $100 to $150 with proceeds benefiting the charity.

Other businesses, like Coppola Pizza in Laurel Springs, have become regular supporters. The family-owned eatery has agreed to donate $2 for every large pizza it sells on Mondays and Tuesdays during the three-month campaign.

The charity effort began after a relative jokingly described Allison and Teddy as "just two boring people." They began using that as a hashtag on social media.

Their first project, a sandwich drive for the homeless in Philadelphia, has spiraled into a grassroots cause, drawing volunteers and requests for help.

Since a Thanksgiving article in The Inquirer about the couple, Teddy said, the outpouring of support from the public has been overwhelming. There were letters, telephone calls and donations - totaling more than $2,000.

"It's really been wonderful," Teddy said. "People are a lot more willing to step up for other human beings than we give each other credit for."

After reading the article, Kenny Watson, 40, of Bellmawr, an old acquaintance, showed up at the Barrington gym where Teddy works with $150 in ShopRite gift cards and tons of food.

A few weeks later, Watson showed up again - this time at a Christmas tree lot - and donated several trees and decorations for needy families.

"It makes you feel good helping people out," said Watson, a disabled sales manager. "It warms my heart."
