Montgomery County drug disposal program to grow

NORRISTOWN A prescription drug disposal program will be expanded in Montgomery County, District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said Monday in a statement.

The program began in April, when 10 secure collection containers were installed around the county. Because it has been so successful - Ferman said more than 2,500 pounds of drugs have been collected so far - new collection sites opened recently at police departments in Douglass, Lower Moreland and Lower Pottsgrove Townships.

"Eight additional locations are expected to open in the near future with support from the Pennsylvania District Attorney's Association," the statement said.

Others providing support to the program include Ferman's office and participating law enforcement agencies.

"We have seen time and again that addiction often begins with minors stealing powerful narcotics from their parents' medicine cabinets," Ferman said. "The only way to truly make an impact in reducing this epidemic of prescription drug addiction is to focus on prevention efforts."
