Widener graduate funds scholarship

CHESTER Tom and Bonnie Bown and Widener University recently established the Gen. Carl E. Mundy Jr. and Linda Sloan Mundy Marine Scholarship Fund.

The Bowns presented $100,000 to the university so the Mundy scholarship could match the amount students receive from the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation up to $5,000 per year for four years.

"The Mundy Marine Scholarship Fund will provide much-deserved financial support to the families of our nation's veterans," Widener president James T. Harris III said on the school's website.

Mundy served as the Marine Corps commandant from 1991 to 1995.

Tom Bown is a 1967 graduate of Widener, formerly Pennsylvania Military College, and a longtime university trustee.

The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military children, with particular attention given to those who have had a parent killed or wounded in combat, or who have demonstrated financial need. - Inquirer staff
