Volunteers sought for tax assistance program in Chesco
Free tax assistance offered
COATESVILLE A Coatesville-based faith organization is recruiting volunteers to do people's taxes for free as part of a service it runs for low- and moderate-income households throughout Chester County.
Life Transforming Ministries participates in the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which offers free tax help to people earning $51,000 or less per year. Last year, the local program helped more than 1,000 households get refunds totaling more than $1.7 million, the organization said.
Those refunds can help people get a lump sum of money they can use to catch up on rent, pay for education, or fund other necessities, said Bill Shaw, executive director for Life Transforming Ministries.
Volunteers can go online or to a classroom session for IRS-certified training. No experience is necessary, but all volunteers must pass a certification test. Life Transforming Ministries will host its first session on Saturday at Immaculata University. Several more sessions will follow in the coming weeks.
Positions include tax preparers, English-Spanish translators, greeters, and quality reviewers.
Life Transforming Ministries typically begins its tax preparation services in late January. For more information, visit ChesterCountyFreeTaxes.org.
