Multi-vehicle crash closes White Horse Pike

GALLOWAY TWP. A 69-year-old Hammonton man was killed Monday and six people were injured when a tractor-trailer apparently ran a red light at the intersection of the White Horse Pike and Pomona Road, striking three cars, authorities said.

The intersection was shut down for hours. Westbound traffic was diverted north to Pomona Road and eastbound traffic was rerouted to Genoa Avenue.

The name of the man killed in the accident was not released. He was driving with his wife and son who were injured and are in the hospital in stable condition, said Sgt. Donna Higbee of the Galloway Township Police Department.

The accident occurred at 10:43 a.m. when the tractor-trailer, heading west on the White Horse Pike, which is Route 30, ran a red light and collided with two vehicles traveling south on Pomona Road, Higbee said, calling the investigation preliminary.

No charges have been filed and it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the accident, she said.

After colliding with the two cars, the truck veered into the eastbound lanes of Route 30 and struck a third vehicle, driven by the Hammonton man, dragging it into a ravine off the roadway.

"It was really bad," Higbee said. "He struck it, flipped it, and went over top of it."

The man and his family had to be extricated from the car, the make and model of which were not immediately identifiable because of the extent of the wreckage, Higbee said.

The six people who were injured were taken to two area hospitals by ambulance and remain in stable condition.

The New Jersey State Police, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, and officers from Hamilton Township and Stockton College Police responded to the scene as did five ambulance crews and three fire departments.

Officers Steven Garrison and Patrick Neal of the Galloway Twp. Police accident reconstruction unit are investigating.
