Crash on AC Expressway injures 10

Seven people, including children, were ejected when a minivan overturned Wednesday evening on the Atlantic City Expressway in Winslow Township, shutting down traffic in both directions, state police Sgt. Adam Grossman said.

Lori Shaffer, a spokeswoman at Cooper University Hospital, said 10 people were being treated there. She said two of the victims were in critical condition, seven were stable, and one had been discharged.

Six of the injured are children, she said.

It was not known whether anyone else was in the van.

Shaffer said that many of the victims are related and that the hospital was waiting for family members to arrive before releasing more information.

Grossman said a white Pontiac minivan traveling west overturned near mile marker 39 at 7:38 p.m.

Three helicopters were called to the scene to take the victims to the hospital. In addition, at least 10 ambulances and four paramedic units were sent to the scene.

The expressway was reopened to traffic late Wednesday, but the right westbound lane remained closed to allow police to continue their investigation.

Troopers from the fatal-accident unit were helping in the investigation. Police said they did not know what caused the crash, which involved only the van.
